Fluorescent 3D printed microstructures could help prevent counterfeiting.
Developed by a team from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in cooperation with ZEISS, the structures are printed using a laser lithography device created by Nanoscribe (a KIT spinoff). This technique allows for the creation of a 3D scaffold embedded with dots that will fluoresce in different colors, while remaining almost invisible to the human eye. The 3D structures would be authenticated using a specialized instrument.
According to the team, the 3D security structure could be embedded in banknotes, as well as high-end products, adding one more counterfeit protection level.
