3D Painting Repairs Worn Metal

3D Painting Repairs Worn Metal
Nov-09-13
GE is developing a 3D painting technology able to repair metal and increase the lifespan of parts by years or decades.

Known as cold-spray, the technique sprays metal powder at high speeds to gradually build up layers of metal on worn, metal components. Unlike 3D printing, 3D spraying is not limited in the size of the objects that can be created. Currently, the process is being investigated as a way to repair the parts used in oil and gas drilling. The repair can be carried out on location and done at room temperature, which makes the method safer than those that require welding or soldering.
