A new 3D-printable thermoplastic material from Torc2 can be used at very low temperatures, opening the door to a host of new medical uses.
According to Torc2 CEO Gary Blundell, the new material was created with the goal of replacing Plaster of Paris with a more comfortable alternative. The company blended several polymers with a low melting point to develop the new material, which shifts from moldable at 131° F to a rigid plastic state a body temperature.
According to the team, the thermoplastic material will allow casts to be reformed on the patient as their needs change, saving material and increasing patient comfort.
