3D-printed ceramic bone implants could help stimulate growth, then dissolve away when the new bone has formed.
Created by researchers from NYU, the 3D-printed ceramic implants offer an appealing alternative to bone grafting. The ceramic implants closely mimic the structure of natural bone, and are coated in the blood-thinning agent dipyridamole, which stimulates growth and attracts stem cells. According to the researchers, the dipyridamole is the ‘key’ to the implant’s success, and the medicine's gradual release prevents side effects
