Researchers have created 3D-printed corneas that could offer a much-needed solution to the shortage of donor corneas.
Developed by a team from the University of Newcastle, the artificial corneas are made from a bio-ink consisting of alginate, collagen and human stem cells. The bespoke corneas could be printed based on a scan of the patient’s eye, eliminating the need for donor tissue.
