Using 3D printing, researchers have developed a battery the size of a grain of sand and able to hold as much energy as its larger counterparts.
The microbatteries were created using a custom built 3D printer and a special ink. The printer stacked the electrode inks, one serving as a cathode and the other as an anode, along the teeth of tiny, gold combs. The layers hardened immediately, and were then placed in tiny containers with an electrolyte solution to complete the battery.
The battery could eventually have applications in electronics such as medical implants and tiny, flying robots.
