A 3D-printed lipstick applicator from the London College of Fashion explores the future of personalized makeup.
The applicator was created based on 3D scans of the lips of volunteers in the study. The scans were then modeled and optimized with Autodesk 3Ds Max and printed using different materials and techniques, with Fused Deposition Modelling Technology using polylactic acid offering the best result. The final mold was filled with a lipstick formulation, which can be applied simply by pressing the surface against the lips—potentially eliminating the need for a mirror.
