MakerBot has unveiled its 3D printing desktop scanner, which allows 3D objects to be scanned, digitized and printed.
Currently a prototype, the Digitizer scans to the object to be printed with cameras and lasers, then converts the data into a digital file to be printed on demand. For people who are not able to design objects themselves, due to lack of skills or software, the device makes 3D printing more possible. While details are still pending, MakerBot founder Bre Pettisthat has said that the device would allow “everyone” to scan an object for printing, seeming to imply that will be much less expensive than current models.
