A new, ankle-worn accelerometer system assesses a person’s movements to detect early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
The system, created by Rostock University and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, makes use of an algorithm they developed that can detect a change in a person’s walking habits. This information is valuable, because one of the first signs of Alzheimer’s is a change in sleeping patterns and daily household activies.
In tests, the device had a 91 percent accuracy rate when detecting individuals with Alzheimer’s, which the researchers claim is more accurate than traditional behavioral rating scales.
