Access4Kids Brings Touchscreens Within Reach

Access4Kids Brings Touchscreens Within Reach
Dec-14-12
The Access4Kids device makes it easier for children with fine motor impairments to use touchscreen devices and take advantage of their numerous benefits.

Developed by a team from Georgia Tech, the wireless input device can be worn on the forearm or placed on a wheelchair arm. It includes three force-sensitive resistors that measure pressure from physical movements and converts them into fine-motor gestures that translate to the “touch-based” commands of the touchscreen. When coupled with the open-source apps and software developed by the team, children are able access such popular off-the-shelf apps as Facebook and YouTube, along with custom-made apps for therapy and education.

The first prototype has already met with success, and the team hopes to begin clinical trials in 2013.
