AD Case Protects Falling Phones

Jun-29-18 The innovative AD Case protects falling smartphones with its spring-loaded airbags.

Developed by master’s student Philip Frenzel, the AD Case (Active Dampening) detects when the phone is in freefall, triggering a set of corner-mounted, hooked springs to deploy and lessen the impact. After the phone has safely landed, the springs can be pushed back into the case for the next unforeseen event.

Frenzel received the top award from the German Society of Mechatronics for his AD Case, which he hopes to bring to commercial development soon.
