Adhesive Patch Heals Bone Fractures

Adhesive Patch Heals Bone Fractures
Apr-25-18
An adhesive patch inspired by dental reconstruction could help heal bone fractures.

The patch, from a team at KTH and the Karolinska Institutet, is embedded with tiny fibers that will entangle with collagen that has been exposed on the bone using an acidic primer. Once in place, the patch is exposed to LED light, causing it to harden in a process called thiol-ene coupling.

According to Michael Malkoch, a professor at KTH, "We believe that the new findings will lead to a paradigm shift in fracture treatment, which in the future can phase out a large portion of today’s metal plates and screws.”
