The Drifter water monitors can detect water quality and velocity in real time to send early warnings about floods or pollution.
Developed by a team from the University of Queensland, the PVC-contained Drifter sensors are affordable enough to be disposable, and so can be deployed by hand or helicopter and allowed to float on the water currents. The Drifters will transmit their collected data via Bluetooth, wireless comms or SIM cards, and can also be used to monitor land-use changes such as waste disposal.
