The inexpensive sKan device uses heat to detect skin cancer quickly.
Developed by a team from McMaster University, the sKan is equipped with an array of extremely sensitive temperature sensors, called thermistors. The skin is checked for melanoma by first cooling the specific area, and then using the sKan to measure the speed at which the skin warms back to normal. Since cancer cells metabolize more quickly than healthy cells, skin with melanoma will warm more rapidly.
