AI-System Determines Identity by Gait

May-31-18 An AI-based system able to identify a person by their gait could have applications in security as well as medical institutions.

The biometric verification system, created by teams from the University of Manchester and the University of Madrid, relies on collecting gait patterns as individuals walk over a pressure-sensing pad. The pattern is then compared to a library of collected patterns, allowing the system to verify the person’s identity. Though limited by its library on gaits, the system has advantages by being unobtrusive and unaffected by noise.

The team believes the biometric system could also be used in medical and smart home settings to recognize conditions such as cognitive decline.
