Airbags for Smartphones

Dec-18-12 Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has officially been awarded a patent for the world’s first smartphone airbag system.

The system features an integrated accelerometer that detects if the phone is falling too quickly, triggering the tiny airbags to cushion the landing. The patent application also includes other ways to break the fall, such as streams of gas to slow the fall or using springs instead of airbags. However, the patent does not address the question of what happens after the airbag or springs have been deployed.
