Scheduled for completion next year, the BIQ building uses a new source of green energy to become the first building powered by algae.
The building, designed by Splitterwerk Architects, is covered with a façade of microalgae enclosed in bio-reactive louvers. The louvers protect the algae and allow them to grow at a rapid rate while providing shade for the building. Heat energy created by the algae is tapped by the bio-reactors and harvested to generate power for the building, and the completion of the building will give scientists and engineers a way to research and adapt the algae technique in future projects.
The BIQ was designed for the International Building Exposition in Hamburg.
