Amphibio Gill Shirt Looks to an Aquatic Future

Amphibio Gill Shirt Looks to an Aquatic Future
Aug-09-18
The Amphibio artificial gills offer a glimpse into the future fashion of climate change.

The Amphibio artificial gills were created by Jun Kamei of the Royal College of Art, and are still in the concept stage. Inspired by diving insects able to envelop their body with a bubble of air, the scalloped vest is made from a patent-pending hydrophobic material that will repel water to create a small oxygen barrier. The air bubbles formed by the vest would be funneled to the mouth and nose for breathing, allowing the user to remain underwater with no heavy equipment.

Though the Amphibio artificial gills will require a great deal of work before they can be used practically by a human, they are an intriguing look at a new kind of ‘survival gear.’
