A new antibiotic-embedded joint implant coating could help reduce the rate of implant infections.
Developed by a team at Massachusetts General, the coating is made up of the commonly used polymer polyethylene, which was infused clusters of antibiotics. This method is an improvement over using bone cement, which does not accept high concentrations of antibiotics very well.
In tests, the new material was able to eliminate all intentional joint infections in test animals, even ones that bone cement infused with antibiotics could not fight.
