A new technology developed by Apple would allow an iPhone to sense when it's been dropped and twist itself to land on "on its feet."
The technology, which was recently awarded a patent, includes a motion sensor that alerts the system when the phone is in free fall. Once the alarm has been raised, the system's processor will determine the angle of the fall and likely impact area, and then change the orientation of the phone by vibrating its built-in motor, ejecting the battery, or activating an airfoil. The patent also includes a feature that would allow the headphone socket to tighten and catch the phone before it hits the ground.
