Artifical Scales Keep Implants in Place

Artifical Scales Keep Implants in Place
Feb-02-18
Researchers have developed artificial scales that could help implants stay secure inside the body.

The lab-grown scales were inspired by the way natural scales, such as those on fish and reptiles, stay attached to soft tissue. The international research team, led by the University of Chicago, created their own microscopic scales using calcite and silicone, resulting in a material that is strong and flexible. One end of the dumbbell-shaped scale was placed in a silicon structure, allowing the other end to protrude so that a tissue sample placed on top was secured in place as the calcium from cells grew into it.
