An innovative artificial skin able to sense changes in temperature could have applications in robotics and wound healing.
The skin, created by a team from CalTech, is made from powdered pectin that has been dissolved in water, mixed with calcium chloride, then spread thin and tried in an oven. The resulting flexible material is about as thick as a human hair, and will respond electrically to even the slightest change in temperature, with a sensitivity being compared to the pit viper.
