Autonomous Caravela Delivers Drones to the Deep Sea

Autonomous Caravela Delivers Drones to the Deep Sea
Jan-14-20
The autonomous Caravela system will transport and deploy an underwater drone, increasing the range of research while minimizing risks and resource use.

The two-part Caravela system developed by the team from the University of East Anglia is made up of the autonomous AutoNaut surface vehicle and the AUV called the Seaglider. The team modified the AutoNaut to carry the AUV, relying on wave foil technology to generate forward thrust solely from the waves. After being launched from land, the AutoNaut’s GPS system will detect when it had reached its destination, triggering the release of the Seaglider.

According to Professor Karen Heywood, "We can now send a Seaglider into the middle of an ocean basin without having to use a ship, and where it is too dangerous to send one."
