AutoSaw Automates Furniture Customization

AutoSaw Automates Furniture Customization
Feb-28-18
MIT’s AutoSaw invention aims to democratize furniture customization by letting robots do the dangerous work.

Developed by the team at MIT’s CSAIL, the experimental AutoSaw works in conjunction with the OnShape CAD system, which allows individuals to customize a professionally designed template. The wooden pieces necessary for the final design are sent to the robot modules, a pair of mobile Kuka Youbots that carry the lumber and guide it through a chop saw, and a modified Roomba that functions as an automated jigsaw. The pieces are then assembled by the user with help from a computer guidance program.
