B-Droids Reduce Bee Stress

Dec-17-16 Designed to help ease the stress on natural bees, the B-Droid robotic bee can fly between flowers to pollinate plants—letting some of the real bees stay home.

While reports on declining bee populations have been making the news, bees can also become stressed by the travels demands placed on them as they are transported to pollinate distant crops.

To help save some of these commuter bees, the team from the Warsaw University of Technology developed the B-Droid robotic bee. The B-Droid has evolved from a ground-based unit to a tiny quadcopter able to fly to a flower and gather pollen. The B-Droids can operate autonomously over a predetermined area, using their onboard cameras and an external computer to plan a flight path as they pollinate the crop.
