Bacteria-Resistant Textiles
Nov-15-12
In an effort to reduce the amount of hospital-acquired infections, a team of researchers have begun developing bacteria-resistant sheets and textiles.
Called the SONO project, the process involves using a sonochemical technique to create and deposit antimicrobial nanoparticles on medical textiles such as sheets, uniforms and bandages. Sonicators are already used industrially and in the food industry, and the process can be carried out in one step. In tests, the anti-bacterial properties remained effective even after 70 laundry cycles.
According to studies, some one in ten patients will be affected by hospital-acquired infections.
