A battery-free phone that harvests power from ambient signals could ensure communication remains intact during emergencies.
Developed by a team at the University of Washington, the prototype cell phone relies on analog voice recording, which saves enough energy to allow the device to run off ambient power sources. According to the team, the technology could be incorporated into existing smartphones to offer an emergency option, as well as be used to create basic phones that never need to be recharged.
