Battery Stretches to 300 Times its Size

Battery Stretches to 300 Times its Size
Mar-05-13
Researchers have developed a battery able to stretch 300 times its size and be charged by inductive charging, opening the door to a new generation of flexible electronics.

The battery consists of a dense array of lithium ion battery cells attached to a stretchable material and connected to each other by “serpentine” connections, wires that loop in a repeating S shape. These connections take up very little space in the array, and will unfurl as the battery is stretched. Even when the battery sheet is stretched to 300 times its size, the wires will absorb the strain while the battery cells remain solid.

The battery can also be charged wirelessly, which makes it useful for providing power to flexible electronic such as wearable sensors and implants. One charge will last the battery for eight to nine hours.
