The Beastcam makes it easier to scan live animals for 3D modeling, offering biologists and researchers a powerful new tool for studying animal characteristics.
The idea for the Beastcam was first conceived by Duncan J. Irschick, a biologist at the University of Massachusetts, while he was studying sharks. Since live animals will not usually hold still for photography, Irschick created the portable Beastcam, which features several cameras mounted on flexible arms. The Beastcam can be used to capture multiple image angles of the animal at one time, which can then be combined into a single 3D model. The technology can be scaled to different sizes, and could have applications beyond live animals.
