The “smart insulin patch” has gotten even smarter with the addition of live beta cells, which replace the insulin used in previous versions.
An evolution of the patch created by two North Carolina Universities, the quarter-sized patch is made from common materials and features an array of microneedles loaded with beta cells. These beta cells produce the insulin that is lacking in diabetic patients. Once applied to the skin, the microneedles painlessly puncture the skin, opening a channel that delivers the cells to the blood vessels. The patch can also detect when the wearer’s blood sugar is elevating and release the insulin as required.
