Better External Power for Medical Implants

Better External Power for Medical Implants
Apr-30-17
A new method of powering implanted medical devices from outside the body could allow the devices to stay in place for a longer time.

While there are already medical implants powered by external sources, these devices are typically just under the skin, and can be powered by near-field coupling.

The new technology, developed primarily for devices implanted in the GI tract, takes advantage of mid-field coupling, which is able to penetrate deeper into the body. Mid-field coupling operates at a higher frequency than near-field, and can deliver power up to three times more efficiently while also reaching further.
