Biodegrable Circuits Localize Painkilling Drugs

Biodegrable Circuits Localize Painkilling Drugs
Aug-11-19
Biodegradable circuits that release painkillers on demand offer a promising way to treat localized pain with less drugs.

Created by a team from EPFL, the implantable circuits feature a tiny magnesium microresonator that will also safely biodegrade in the body. When the resonator is exposed to an alternating electromagnetic field, it will heat up enough to melt a small capsule containing the medication. As the technology progresses, the microresonator and encapsulated medication could be implanted near the source of pain and triggered when needed, reducing the need for catheters and keeping the drugs from moving throughout the body.
