Bioinspried Robot Adapts to Damage

Bioinspried Robot Adapts to Damage
Dec-16-17
A new robot inspired by the brittle starfish can adapt to damage to continue operation.

Developed by teams at Tohoku and Hokkaido universities, the five-armed robot features a decentralized control mechanism and sensors in each arm able to measure reactive force. If an arm is damaged in a way that impedes the bot’s movement in the chosen direction, that segment will cease operation and allow the other arms to compensate. The robot can adapt within seconds, which is faster than current examples that can take tens of seconds to adjust.
