Biological Bricks Made of Urine

Biological Bricks Made of Urine
Oct-27-18
The world’s first biological brick made using human urine could offer an innovative option for waste recovery.

Developed by a team from the University of Cape Town, the bio-bricks are created via microbial carbonate precipitation, similar to how seashells form. To build the bricks, the team colonized sand with bacteria that produce the urease enzyme, which breaks down the urea in urine to produce calcium carbonate. This reaction causes the sand to take on a solid structure in the shape of the mold containing it, including sturdy rectangular shapes that can be used as building bricks.
