Bionic Limb Wearer Climbs 103 Floors of Stairs

Bionic Limb Wearer Climbs 103 Floors of Stairs
Nov-06-12
A newly released mind-controlled, power prosthetic leg has allowed a 31-year lower-limb amputee to climb the steps of the Chicago (now Willis) Tower.

The device, developed at Vanderbilt University, is able to interact with the user—Zac Vawter, in this case—by responding to electrical impulses in the wearer’s hamstring and activating its knee and ankle motors in response to the forces applied to it. This response allows the device to propel wearer forward in a way similar to actual muscles, creating more natural gait.
