Inspired by the sea anemone, the simple and affordable bionic torus robotic gripper can safely grasp objects of various sizes and weights.
The gripper was developed as an alternative to multi-digit devices, which tend to be complex and made up of a large number of components. In contrast, the gripper created by the teams at Southwest University of Science and Technology and Tsinghua University relies on a liquid-filled ring wrapped in a thermoplastic rubber skin. When the bottom of the device is placed against the object and pulled, the ring will roll inward to engulf the object, regardless of its size or shape.
