A new biosensor able to detect iron deposits in the brain could offer an early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
While it has been established that iron deposits in the brain are a definite indicator of Alzheimer’s, the deposits could typically only be detected at high concentrations. Developed by a team from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, the technology relies on a new MRI contrast agent based on functionalized magnetic particles. The contrast agent increases the sensitivity of the MRI significantly, allowing small amounts of the iron deposits to be detected and providing an earlier diagnosis of the disease.
