Boeing has patented an amphibious drone able to transform itself from an aerial drone into a submarine.
The drone would be launched from a carrier aircraft near the assigned location, and then shift into submarine mode when it hits the water by shedding some of its flight-only gear such as the wings and stabilizer. According to the patent, these parts would be attached to the drone by “exploding bolts” or glue that will dissolve in contact with salt water. Once in the water, the craft’s onboard buoyancy tank and propellers allow it to travel to an assigned location, whether delivering cargo or performing reconnaissance.
