Bomb-Sniffing Spinach

Bomb-Sniffing Spinach
Nov-01-16
Researchers have infused spinach leaves with nanobionics to give the plant bomb-detecting abilities.

Developed by a team from MIT, the technology involves applying a solution of nanoparticles to the underside of the spinach leaves, where they are absorbed into the layer where photosynthesis takes place. This allows the plant to detect nitroaromatic compounds (often used in landmines) in the groundwater absorbed by the plant’s roots. If the plant comes in contact with the nitroaromatic compound, the sensors will emit a fluorescent signal that can be detected by an infrared camera and laser. That signal can in turn be automatically sent via email to alert the user to the dangerous compounds.

Would this principle be possible indoors with radon and other impurities in air and water? This could be one plant among others in an eatable greenwall.

How far is that plant-to-human communication? Plants diagnosing human mood and condition from breathing, smell and touch? Next transpiring healing molecules. I suppose many persons would prefer soft technology instead of gadgets and drugs.
