Bone Implant Fights Infection

Bone Implant Fights Infection
Feb-01-19
A newly improved bone implant infused with copper fights infection and promotes bone growth.

The implant was created by a team led by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland to help treat the bone infection osteomyelitis, which can occur after a broken bone or deep puncture wound and is very difficult to treat.

The implant developed by the team could replace the standard treatment of high-dose antibiotics and surgery with an implant made up of collagen and bioactive glass that has been infused with copper particles. Bioactive glass is a common bone-repair material that enhances bone repair, while the copper ions kill harmful bacteria without the need for additional antibiotics.
