A brain implant able to reduce cell death could help suppress epileptic seizures even after being removed.

Being developed by Gloriana Therapeutics in a study led by Asst. Professor Giovanna Paolone, the implant features a membrane containing bioengineered human ARPE-19 cells that secrete the protein glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). According to research, that protein can help reduce cell death in the hippocampus, which also reduces seizures.

In studies on mice implanted with the device, seizures were reduced by up to 93 percent after three months, with the reduced rate continuing even after the device was removed,
