Brain Implant Stops Seizures

A wireless brain implant from Draper could offer new treatments for epilepsy without the risk of side effects.

While there are brain stimulators that can help treat epilepsy without medication, they are implanted under the skin of the chest with leads to the brain, limiting the amount of neurostimulation that can be delivered. To offer a more effective method, the team from Draper medical developed a prototype device 20 times smaller than current options that can be directly implanted in the brain. Once in place, the implant will sense the cascade of neuron that indicates an imminent seizure and release medication to stop it.

According to Dr. Christopher Proctor, lead author of the Science Advances paper, “In addition to being able to control exactly when and how much drug is delivered, what is special about this approach is that the drugs come out of the device without any solvent. This prevents damage to the surrounding tissue and allows the drugs to interact with the cells immediately outside the device.”
