Bringing Solid-State Cooling Into the Home

Bringing Solid-State Cooling Into the Home
Dec-28-14
By applying solid-state technology to cooling devices, the startup Phononic hopes to change the way people approach controlling the temperature in their homes.

Solid-state technology not only allows devices to run more efficiently, but also much more quietly and without creating vibrations. Meant to replace the compressor on conventional refrigerators, the Phononic device works by sending a current through a specialized semi-conductor, generating heat on one side of the conductor that cools the opposite side as long as the current is on. As well as saving energy, the solid-state technology eliminates the need for toxic refrigerants.

The company's technology can also be applied to electronics, and can be fine-tuned to suit specific component needs.
