Building a Better Vaccine

Building a Better Vaccine
Apr-29-16
An innovative approach to vaccine creation replaces the virus itself with a virus-like structure, and could offer the cure for a wide range of diseases, including cancer.

Typically, vaccines for different diseases are made up of weakened version of the virus itself, injected into the bloodstream to trigger antibodies. However, the vaccine technology created by a team from the University of Copenhagen replaces the entire virus with specific, harmless bits of the virus attached to a structure that mimics the shape of the virus. Developing vaccines using this method is not only simple and inexpensive, it also opens the door to creating vaccines that were previously not possible, such as for cancer or allergies.
