A camera connected, ‘cognitive hearing aid’ adds a new element of understanding to hearing aid technology.
Developed by a team from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, the cognitive hearing aid is based on the knowledge that we don’t rely solely on sound when communicating. To that end, the hearing aid is equipped with a small camera and processing algorithm that allows the system to predict the sounds a speaker is about to make based on the position of their mouth. This, in turn, enables the system to boost the appropriate sounds while canceling others—much the way our brain uses selective hearing in noisy environments.
