Cancer-Detecting Contacts

Cancer-Detecting Contacts
Apr-09-17
Contact lenses embedded with transparent sensors could one day be used to help detect early signs of cancer.

Developed by a team of engineers at Oregon State University, the key to the technology is the newly developed semiconductor, indium gallium zinc oxide. This material enabled the team to make a transparent film filled with an enzyme that reacts with glucose in tears to trigger a conductivity change. The team believes that as well as functioning as a blood sugar meter, the sensor-packed contact lens could also be used to detect other biomarkers, such as those for cancer.
