Cap Thwarts Facial Recognition Cameras

Cap Thwarts Facial Recognition Cameras
Mar-22-18
An LED baseball cap tricks facial recognition technology into thinking the wearer is someone else.

Developed by teams from China and the US, the cap is equipped with LEDs that project small infrared dots onto the wearer’s face. These dots are interpreted by facial-recognition cameras as false facial details, tricking the camera into incorrectly identifying the individual. In demonstrations of the cap, the cameras were made to identify the wearer as the singer, Moby.

Although the research paper has not been peer-reviewed, the technology offers insight into ways today’s surveillance systems could be thwarted, for better or worse.
