Carbon-Powered Solar Still offers Near-Perfect Efficiency

Carbon-Powered Solar Still offers Near-Perfect Efficiency
May-05-18
A new solar still invention inspired by an ancient technology can purify water with near-perfect efficiency.

Developed by a team at the University of Buffalo, the solar still relies on a sheet of carbon-dipped paper draped to form an upside down V, with the bottom edges of the material placed in a container of water. As the paper soaks up the water, sunlight hitting the strips heats it up to encourage evaporation. The angle of the strip also prevents it from becoming too warm, which allows the water to evaporate quickly and produces more vapor for collection.
