Castaway Casting Stand Eases Prosthetic Fittings

Castaway Casting Stand Eases Prosthetic Fittings
Apr-04-17
The simple yet ingenious Castaway casting stand makes it easier for patients to stand while being fitted for prosthetic limbs.

The stand was inspired by a request from the Hangar Clinic, which specializes in prosthetics and orthotics, yet still relied on a pair of parallel bars for the fittings—requiring patients to support themselves the entire time with just their hands.

To offer a more comfortable solution, a group of freshmen students at Rice University repurposed a piece of design equipment to create a support with both a backrest and armrests. The Castaway Casting Stand not only helps hold the patient more comfortably, but also ensures their posture remains upright—vital in ensuring a proper fit.
