Researchers have developed a wound healing contact lens that could reduce the need for donor membranes.
Amniotic membranes have proven helpful in treating inflammation and reducing scarring, but the effects can vary and the membranes can be hard to obtain. To offer a more standardized approach, the team from Queensland University developed a therapeutic contact lens that fits over the cornea. The underside of the lens, called a scleral lens, is coated with cells harvested from tissue usually discarded after corneal transplants, which promote a wide range of healing factors.
According to the team, the therapy could offer relief to patients with chronic conditions as well as acting as a first-line therapy.
